Surgical Abortion

Familiarize yourself with a piece of information about surgical abortion and its common methods, which are usually used to perform this type of abortion.
Surgical Abortion

Abortion becomes more dangerous and complicated after the 16 weeks. Only dilation and evacuation or ( D & E ) can be used up to 18th week. This method requires greater dilation of the cervix than others do. It also requires the use of suction, a large curettage, and a delivery forceps, some kind of grasping tool, to remove the fetus. D & E is a complicated procedure because of the size of the fetus and thin walls of the uterus. A pair of delivery forceps is inserted into the womb to grasp part of the fetus. The teeth of the forceps twist and tear the body of the unborn child. This process is repeated until the fetus is totally dismembered and removed. In order to remove the spine and the skull they must be snapped and crashed.

During this procedure bleeding in the uterus often occurs. D & E requires general anesthesia and must be performed only in a clinic or hospital. This method of surgical abortion is usually used in the 1st week of on the 2nd trimester but can be conducted up to the 24th week of pregnancy.

Such method as salt poisoning or saline injection is used after 16 weeks (4 months). It is the period of development of the fetus when enough fluid has accumulated. A strong salt solution is injected with the help of a long needle into the baby’s sac through the maternal abdomen. The baby swallows this poison fluid and dies. Such strong solution corrodes and burns off the outer layer of skin. It usually takes about one hour to kill the baby from this. Within next 24 hours required task is carried out and mother gives birth to a dead or dying baby. It happens that some of these babies born alive, but they are usually left without any care to die.

In the late stage of abortions intact dilation and extraction (intact D & X) is used. This method also called intrauterine cranial decompression. It requires the surgical decompression of the fetus’s head before evacuation. D & X is sometimes termed “partial-birth abortion” or “bad medicine”. Firstly the doctor grabs the baby’s legs with forceps into the birth canal while the head remains in the uterus. Then he delivers the baby’s entire body, except for the head. The abortionist makes a whole in the back of the skull to remove the brains with a suction catheter. It causes the skull to collapse. The dead baby is then removed.

A hysterotomy abortion can also be used at late stages of pregnancy. An incision is made in the woman’s abdomen. The baby is removed then allowed to die by neglect. This method is similar to a caesarian section but resulting in a terminated fetus. It can be performed vaginally with an incision just above the cervix.

NOTE: An injection to stop the fetal heart can be used as the first phase of the surgical abortion procedure. Such injection is used between the 20th to 23rd weeks of gestation.
