| General Guidelines | You should constantly check with your clinic, but general guidelines before undergoing an abortion include:
- Don’t eat, drink or smoke for six hours prior to the operation. - Allow for at least two hours at the clinic. - Take hygienic pads, your recommendation letter, blood group card, Medicare card and any health care card. - Organize for someone to drive you home after the procedure.
Anaesthetic Alternatives A large amount of women like better general anaesthetic. All types of anaesthesia need fasting for six hours in advance. This means no food or drink, not even water. The variety of anaesthetic choices includes:
General anaesthetic It induces total unconsciousness. Any procedure involving general anaesthesia has risk. There is a threat of choking if fasting isn’t correctly undertaken beforehand.
Nitrous oxide It offers what’s known as a “twilight sleep”. The woman is awake, but sedated and calm.
Local anaesthetic This anaesthetic is injected directly into the cervix.
Local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation This is a combination of intravenous sedation and analgesia with a paracervical block.
