A 1998 study assembled all the data from studies in 27 countries on the reasons women resort to terminate pregnancies. It concluded common factors influenced on the women’s abortion decision. Among them were such as the desire to delay or end childbearing, concern over the interruption of work or education, questions of financial and relationship stability, and sensed immaturity.

Some abortions happen in a result of social pressures. Social pressures include such issues as the stigmatization of disabled persons, preference for children of a specific sex, disapproval or single maternity, difficult of access to or rejection of contraceptive methods, or conscious efforts to control the population explosion (such as  China’s one-child policy). These factors cause obligatory abortion or sex-selective abortion. It often happens, especially in developing countries or where abortion is forbidden, that women resort to “back-alley” or self-induced procedures. The World Health Organization considers that there are 19 million terminations of pregnancy annually, which don’t fit the bill of medicine.
