Termination of pregnancy before delivery which accompanied by the death of the fetus is known as abortion. One part of abortions happens because of natural reasons; it may be wrong fetus developing, mother’s injury or disorder that prevents woman from carrying the pregnancy to term. This type of spontaneous abortion is ordinary known as miscarriage. Another part of abortions is induced. It occurs when the pregnancy is unwanted or presents any risk to a woman’s health.
There are several definitions of abortion in modern medicine:
1. Spontaneous Abortion also known as miscarriage usually causes by trauma or natural reasons, such as chromosomal number difference, early sicknesses, or environmental factors.
2. Induced Abortion. This abortion deliberately caused. Induced abortions are further subcategorized into therapeutic abortions and elective abortions.
3. Therapeutic Abortions occur: -for saving the life of the pregnant woman; -for preserving woman’s physical or mental health; -to terminate a pregnancy that can develop into a congenital disorder which would be fatal or coupled with essential incidence; -for selection of reducing the number of fetuses to lessen health risk connected with multiple pregnancy;
4. Elective Abortion performed for any other reasons.
Sometimes pregnancy ends before 37 completed weeks of gestation and the infant is born and survives; this delivery is termed premature birth. However, at times it occurs that pregnancy ends with an infant dead before birth at any gestational stage, because of spontaneous abortion or other different complications during delivery. Such pregnancy is termed a stillbirth.
General use of the word “abortion” associated with induced abortion of a human fetus. Nevertheless, the word “abortion” can also mean a spontaneous abortion (miscarriage).
